Pretty simple plan, since you have to reserve campgrounds ahead of time, so each day involved hiking to the next campground on the itinerary. We left the house early, about 6:30am, as it is a 2 1/4hr drive, and we had to drive and hike the first leg on the same day.
Ken is an avid birder, myself I like to take photos. We both indulged in our interests along the hike each day, which meant that we were not rushing through each days hike.
For personal safety and to communicate I carry a Spot personal locator beacon. On a hike with so many people traversing the trail, you are never alone. I like carrying the Spot, as it does make you more self sufficient. Plus you can send an “We are Ok” message back to friends and family. I feel that it is good to send some reassurance to those back home that everything is Ok. The plan was to send a Spot message at breakfast and dinner.
